Ohio Students Mic Check the Gas Industry: "We Won't Stop Until You Do!"
Over the last year, gas industries across Ohio haven't just been targeting land owners and communities: they've also been sneaking onto our campuses and hosting panels, info sessions and networking events that promote shale development jobs. These events are an opportunity for the industry to spread biased and unbalanced information on horizontal hydraulic-fracturing: a dangerous and unconventional new drilling technique that is threatening communities across the country. In Ohio especially, the fracking industry has been vocal about what they call 'this countries next big shale play' referencing the Utica shale- a formation covering 2/3 of our state and speculated to be even more productive than the Marcellus shale across Pennsylvania and New York. That's why students at Ohio State University took this opportunity to expose the industry and make it clear that their dirty energy, exploitative drilling practices, and environmental injustices aren't welcome in Ohio.
...And when students say 'We won't stop until you do!', they mean it. Groups across the state are organizing to ban fracking in their local communities and on their campuses, and our movement will continue to confront the gas industry when we challenge Y.O.U.N.G- Ohio's first Utica Shale Conference, happening on Nov. 30th.
