My activist life started in Athens, GA, where over 250 students and young people gathered to attend the 6th Southeast Student Renewable Energy Conference last fall.
I was invited by two environmental leaders at my campus. However, the reason I decided to attend the conference was because I was inspired by the work my environmental leaders were doing on campus. I wanted to be resource of knowledge and learn anything there was to learn about renewable energy and taking action, and I also set a personal goal to do more traveling/networking in order to feel more in tuned with the outside world. I felt SSREC would give me that opportunity, and that’s why I decided to be a part of it. Therefore, I walked in with the curiosity of a cat and within minutes I felt as if I found my place in the world.
I was expecting to feel out of place and lost but that was not the case. Everyone was helpful, pleasant and willing to share their knowledge. It was my first big environmental conference and I thought it was amazing, inspirational and empowering.
