Join the Youth Climate Movement as we stand in solidarity and showcase the breadth and depth of the Global Climate Justice Movement. Young people across the globe are leading a Power Shift Movement — addressing the climate crises by standing up to corporate polluters while lifting up community and campus based solutions.

The dirty energy industry is jeopardizing the future of young people, indigenous peoples, people in developing nations, and people in small island states, but there are young people across the planet who are passionate and committed to stabilizing the climate, restoring democracy and upholding human rights.

COP 17 in Durban will be the first international space we will feature. Follow us here at WeArePowerShift-Global Edition to determine whether COP17 will be a Conference of Polluters (COP) or a Conference of the People (COP).

Will this be your climate legacy? This is the question we ask our leaders as they take part in two weeks of climate negotiations in Doha, Qatar.

In the past year, we’ve seen droughts, floods, wildfires and hurricanes across the globe. We saw Sandy leave a path of destruction up along the coast, from the Caribbean to New York City. We saw heat records shattered, making 2012 the 9th hottest year on record. We saw an unprecedented loss of ice cover on the North Pole. And just this week, a report was released finding the Arctic permafrost is melting even more quickly than predicted, releasing more greenhouse gases.

The world that my generation lives in is shaping up to be dramatically different than the world that humans have inhabited for the last 10,000 years. The world in which we’ve grown up is dramatically different even from the world in which our parents grew up. Climate change is not an issue for future generations. It’s not even just an issue for my generation's children. Climate change is an issue for my generation. We are facing the impacts today.

Youth Head to Another UN Climate Change Conference

Yes, it is that time of year again. Turkeys are being cooked, Christmas music is on the radio, and SustainUS is sending another delegation to the UN Climate Change Conference. As always, this year’s delegation promises to make waves at the climate change conference known as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18). Parties are just United Nations lingo for nations that are subject to a treaty (the convention), so it sounds more festive than the UN actually intends.

Per usual, the SustainUS delegation has been prepping since August to have a maximum impact at the conference. However, for those of you who have not been spending all your free time researching, strategizing, and planning on spending half your holidays inside of a convention center, let’s review what’s on the docket in this, the year of our 18th party.

In Search of Water

Project Survival Media is a global youth media network producing short documentaries on climate change issues. We assemble media teams all over the world to document how people are being impacted by climate change and how people are responding to it.

Our Team India produced a powerful film in the Thar Desert on water scarcity and security. The Thar Desert is one of the most water stressed areas of India and with climate change average rainfall is expected to be more erratic and irregular. Research shows that already every one in five years is a drought year.
