The Filthy 15 are some of the largest, dirtiest coal companies in the U.S. These companies are jeopardizing public health, damaging the environment, placing an unfair burden on low-income and minority communities, and are fast-becoming an increasingly risky investment.

Coal Burning Companies


  1. American Electric Power: AEP burns more coal than any other utility.

  2. Ameren: The average age of Ameren’s plants is 50 years old, which increases the likelihood that they pollute at levels that do not adhere to updated EPA standards.

  3. Dominion: Dominion is embroiled in legal battles over the inadequate coal ash disposal in Kingston, Tennessee, where a coal ash pond containing over one billion gallons of the ash caused a landslide that engulfed the town in 2008.

  4. Duke: Duke was the #1 killer responsible for 1,248 deaths in 2010.

  5. Edison International: Operates 3 Plants that List Among the 12 US Environmental Justice Offenders.

  6. FirstEnergy: After a merger with Allegheny, they doubled their coal- burning capacity.

  7. GenOn: GenOn has one of the dirtiest fleets of coal plants in the nation.

  8. Mid-American: They own Pacificorp, one of the dirtiest energy providers on the West Coast.

  9. PPL: PPL doled out $25 million to neighbors of its Colstrip plant after its coal ash ponds leeched into local groundwater and privately-owned wells in 2009.

  10. Southern: Southern is the 4th largest carbon polluter in the world.

Coal Mining Companies


  1. Alpha: Alpha bought Massey and has nine environmental violations per day.

  2. Arch: Arch is the second largest coal producer in the U.S.

  3. CONSOL Energy: CONSOL is the operator of seven of the 20 U.S. mines with the most safety citations.

  4. Patriot: Patriot is the second largest practitioner of mountaintop removal mining.

  5. Peabody: Peabody is the world’s largest private-sector coal company.
