This summer, amidst extreme weather and intensifying global warming, young people and community organizations are launching a surge of direct actions. Together these actions form a Summer of Solidarity — a nationwide escalation against the injustices of fossil fuel extraction; a citizen uprising squarely confronting the culprits of the climate crisis.

Clean Coal is a Dirty Lie - Rally to End Mountain Top Removal

On Thursday September 13, just four days after the passing of Keepers of the Mountains Founder Larry Gibson, activists held a rally against mountaintop removal in front of the White House.  Many “Mountain Heroes”, fighting coal companies in Appalachia trekked to Washington DC and joined voiced with concerned citizens, environmental organizations, clean air and water defenders, and those who believe in social justice and clear and fair energy.

Organized as part of the Summer of Solidarity, attendees gathered to stand with Appalachia, an area hit hardest by the pollution and destruction of mountain top removal.  Today over 13,500 photo petitions – the largest collection ever - were delivered to the White House on behalf of citizens who took photos and shared personal stories, demanding President Obama and his administration put an end to mountaintop removal mining.  Numerous studies show that people living near mountaintop removal mining have high cancer rate, are suffering major diseases, having babies with birth defects, and children with asthma.

Uprising in Montana: Activists Take a Stand Against Coal Exports

It wasn’t as big as we’d hoped. These things never are, until, well, they are.

It didn’t really matter though: Hundreds converged from across the country for the Coal Export Action and 23 participated in five days of civil disobedience in protest of the coal industry’s latest scheme to save itself from obsolescence. The message we sent reverberated around the state capitol here in Helena, MT: We will not sit idly by while King Coal attempts to export coal from the Powder River Basin through port towns in Oregon and Washington to Asian energy markets.

Thoughts following the RAMPS action camp

On a steamy New York City morning in July, I took the subway to the airport to catch a flight to North Carolina to catch a layover to Charleston, West Virginia, where my Swarthmore Mountain Justice buddies picked me up for a drive through the winding wooded roads of southwestern West Virginia mountain country.

I was going to WV to participate in the RAMPS Mountain Mobilization action camp, about which I knew basically nothing. I had been a member of Swarthmore Mountain Justice (MJ) for one year and felt that my visit to “the frontlines” was overdue, no matter where or how it should happen. One year with MJ was one year of working to organize and implement our small but feisty battle against mountain top removal (MTR), through a divestment campaign targeting Swarthmore’s investments in fossil fuel extraction companies.

July 25- August 1: Mountain Mobilization, WV:
Hundreds of people will demand an end to mountaintop removal by preparing to and taking non-violent direct action to occupy and shut down a strip mine.

July 26-July 28: Stop the Frack Attack, DC:
The first national mobilization to stop hydraulic fracturing. Thousands will come together to put an end to the oil industry’s attack on our communities, water, and air quality.

August 12-20: Coal Export Action, MT:
Residents from the Northern Plains to the Pacific Northwest coast will be converging at Montana’s state capitol for a week-long sit-in to demand the MT Land Board stop the building of the Otter Creek mine, and the development of coal exports.

August-September: Tar Sands Blockade, TX:
Citizens and landowners will blockade TransCanada’s attempts to develop the southern segments of the Keystone XL pipeline.

August 24th-25th: Don’t Frack New York:
New Yorkers will come together to pledge resistance to Gov. Cuomo’s proposal to allow the oil and gas industry to take over the state with thousands of new drilling rigs that will pollute water, air, and pipe radioactive gas into homes.
