Something to be thankful for

There are many things to be thankful for this time of year, but above all we are thankful for you, and the leadership you have shown.

From Power Shift to Occupy Wall Street, we are seeing the resurgence of a youth-driven movement that has the power, ambition, and creativity to take back our country from the forces of corporate greed. And if anything is clear, it’s that you are at the forefront of this movement, and this is only the beginning.

For us, there is no better example of what this movement is capable of than your victory in the fight against Keystone XL. Thanks to your work, President Obama delayed (and likely killed) the pipeline that, back in August, was considered a done deal.

  • To the 1,252 people who engaged in civil disobedience in front of the White House to bring the threat of Keystone XL to light, thank you.

  • To the thousands of you who called the White House and signed petitions to President Obama, thank you.

  • To everyone who took it to the streets at a regional Power Shift in Virginia, Ohio, Oregon and North Carolina, and the 12,000 that surrounded the White House, thank you.

  • To the hundreds of campus and community leaders who took part in October’s 100 Actions for 100% Clean Energy to show that our generation is serious about building a clean energy future, thank you.

  • To the 10,000 people who came to Power Shift 2011 in April and re-ignited our movement to work harder and stand stronger than ever before, thank you.

This was a remarkable victory for our country, a victory for the climate, but most of all, this was a victory for you. This is just one step in the fight for a clean and just future for our country. There is much more work to be done, but thanks to you, we know the sky is the limit.

Let us know what you’re thankful for by leaving a comment on the blog and spread the thanks by sharing the post with your friends.

Next week I’ll be moving from Energy Action Coalition to our partners at the Sierra Club. I sincerely cannot thank you all enough for the work we’ve been able to do together, it’s been an incredible ride.

My Co-Director Maura, the staff at Energy Action Coalition, and our partners are excited to continue to work with you all to lead this movement. In the coming weeks we’ll be rolling out bold plans to take us into the new year — keep leading!
