Whoever is directing the next Batman movie should take note of Duke Energy’s CEO Jim Rogers. He’s the corporate star of this year’s Democratic National Convention and he’s already playing the character of the nefarious Two-Face quite well.
This Thursday, after corralling millions of dollars for Obama’s convention, Two-Face Jim will take the stage ahead of President Obama. Most likely, he’ll talk about how Duke Energy supports a clean energy agenda, how the US economy needs to regain its competitive edge and how President Barack Obama is the person that can lead us through these rocky times. And then he’ll hop off the stage, head to his CEO Suite at Duke Energy Headquarters and continue to write checks to ALEC, the far right network that moves forward a dirty energy, anti-woman, voter suppression agenda.
What gall! Standing on the stage in support of President Barack Obama while helping to fund a voter suppression agenda that directly impacts the President’s voting base of young people and people of color. If this were a movie, our super hero Batman would jump into Thursday’s convention and our democracy would be saved about 90 minutes later. But this isn’t a movie. This is real life, where the super heroes for our democracy are the every day people standing up to demand change.
At its fullest impact, ALEC’s voter suppression agenda would remove 5,000,000 people from the polls. Five million! That’s the equivalent of taking the entire populations of Wyoming, Vermont, North Dakota, Alaska, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana and Rhode Island out of the electorate. But it’s worse. ALEC’s voter suppression agenda impacts people of color and young people more than other parts of the population. Since these two cohorts of voters are overwhelmingly progressive, it makes perfect sense that the CEO’s of the 1% would want to silence their voice at the polls.
Diversity. Solidarity. Empowerment. If we truly stand for these principles, then we must push back on voter suppression. We must dismantle the corporate cronyism found in ALEC that is systematically curtailing the right to vote in this country. And we have to make sure that Two-Face Jim Rogers stops cutting fat-cat checks to ALEC and the Koch Brothers.
Be a super hero for democracy. Tell Jim Rogers it’s time to #dumpALEC today.
