This morning people across Washington, DC got a dose of reality about Bank of America.

In the dark of night activists went to all known Bank of America branches and over 50 ATMs to transform them into “Automated Truth Machines.”

Activists used special non-adhesive stickers designed to look exactly like BoA’s ATM interface, so when people went to use ATMs in the morning they would learn the truth about Bank of America. Instead of checking and saving accounts, these new menus offered a list of everything BoA customers’ money is used for, including investment in coal-fired power plants, foreclosure on Americans’ homes, bankrolling climate change, and paying for fat executive bonuses.

Residents across DC are encouraged to use the Twitter hashtag #BoAtruth to report finding ATMs that have been turned into the “Automated Truth Machines” to get the word out about Bank of America’s destructive practices.

Here's a handy map of all the BoA ATMs we made it a bit more truthful last night.

This spoof comes as part of a National Student Day of Action against Bank of America and student debt. Over 2000 students have pledged to not do business with Bank of America and take action until Bank of America cleans up its act.

The student day of action occurred on 1T Day, the day that student debt hit $1 trillion dollars, and students on campuses across the country took action to voice their demands. Students at George Washington University hosted a teach-in on student debt outside a campus branch of Bank of America, students at University of Massachusetts, Amherst burned their students loans outside their Bank of America branch, along with students at Yale University, University of Chicago, University of Oregon, University of Texas. And in Bank of America’s home state, UNC-Chapel Hill students delivered demands to stop financing coal to their local BoA branch.

“Today we’re delivering our demands to Bank of America to stop financing dirty coal and bankrupting our future” said Tait Chandler, a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, “Students across the country are using their financial power to demand Bank of America clean up their act, and we’re delivering those demands right here in North Carolina, where Bank of America is headquartered.”

Students and young people are one of the most important demographics to Bank of America, as a huge emerging customer base and a significant chunk of their business. The goal is to have at least 3000 students pledge to “Move Their Money” in the lead-up to Bank of America’s May 9th shareholder meeting.

These actions are happening in the lead up to BoA’s May 9th shareholder meeting where environmental and economic justice groups are coming together to ensure that Bank of America stop bankrupting our future.
