Quit Coal, Michigan State University

Hi my name is Jordan Lindsay and I am a sophomore at Michigan State University. I'm a member of the campus group MSU Greenpeace that has been running the Quit Coal campaign for the past two and a half years.

I first got involved with the group last year, my freshman year, when a friend invited me to a meeting. From the very beginning I was hooked. I had always wanted to do something good for people and the planet and now was my chance. I started petitioning, and planning a movie screening, and basically volunteered for whatever I could.

The people in the group made me feel so welcome and I learned so much about the true costs of coal. Not only did I learn how huge of a contributor to climate change burning coal is, I also learned of that its entire life cycle is hazardous to human health. We continued my first semester by disrupting Board of Trustees meetings and having a die- in on campus. As a result of the pressure we were putting on the administration we got to put a representative on the Steering Committee for a 20-30 year energy plan for the university.

100 Actions for 100% Clean Energy Kick-off!

Last night I dialed sixteen numbers, put my ear-up to the phone and heard the voices of one Mike Brune (Executive Director or Sierra Club), one Phil Radford (Executive Director of Greenpeace) and more than 75 inspiring youth organizers. What magic movement hotline was I on, you ask? No shame I’ll tell ya: it was none other than the “100 Actions for 100% Clean Energy” kick-off call

9PM sharp and the business started. Howling regional shout outs followed by a task: More than 100 student-led aggressive actions for clean energy nationwide.

Why us? Students have always led social movements: think women’s rights, civil rights, and the anti-war movement. Every major social revolution has been led and driven by young people; it’s time for the green movement to be added to that list.

100 Actions Launch Call w/ Mike Brune & Phil Radford, Tues at 9 ET!

Tuesday night at 9 ET we're kicking-off the 100 Actions campaign push on a National Call with Mike Brune and Phil Radford, the Executive Directors of the Sierra Club and Greenpeace, two of the leading national organizing in the fight to move beyond coal. 

Mike and Phil will share with us their organizational strategies to move beyond coal into a 100% clean energy economy, and talk about the important role young people have to play, starting with the upcoming October month-of-action called 100% Clean: 100 Actions for Clean Energy.

100 Actions: A Drumbeat So Loud It Can't Be Ignored

Millions of young people are impacted by dirty energy every day — more than half a million from coal-fired power plants right on their college campuses.

This is unacceptable, and we are excited to launch a new campaign push with partners across the country to take this injustice head on: 100 Actions for 100% Clean Energy.

This October, over 100 local actions will challenge our university administrators and local officials to move beyond dirty energy, and unite the voices of our generation behind the call for 100% clean energy solutions.

Students from Washington, DC and the Greenpeace Student Network created this video to show the power we have when we come together.

Students Rally in Rain, Call on UNC Trustees Divest from Coal

Students brave the rain and rally in front of the Board of TrusteesWednesday afternoon in the pouring rain UNC Beyond Coal supporters gathered on the steps of the Ackland Art Museum to rally in front the Board of Trustees as they walked to dinner. The students called on the university to stop funding the coal industry and divest the UNC endowment from coal company holdings. Students held signs proclaiming the negative effects of coal and chanted in support of a responsible endowment.

Several activists inspired the ralliers by sharing their personal stories about the coal industry and explaining that the campaign to move beyond coal to clean energy is among the most important causes on campus and in the country.  Stewart Boss, UNC Sierra Student Coalition Co-Chair, read a copy of the letter that he later delivered to several trustees and the chancellor, and despite the pouring rain the rally was certainly a success.  “Even if there is a hurricane coming we’ll be here to ask the trustees for their support to move the endowment out of coal,” said Sierra Student Coalition organizer Harry Alper, summing up the dedication of the attending students.

The Trustees were impressed as well – board member John Ellison remarked, “Y’all are mighty hearty and you believe in your campaign.”
